An introduction to the dojo from Professor Hillary Kaplowitz

As Sensei, I want to be the first to welcome you to Pacific JuJitsu Kai. My study of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my life. I started in a junior program and as a kid it not only helped me develop physical skills, but taught me important life lessons about setting goals and that focus and effort are key ingredients to reach them. This practice also inspired me to pursue a career as an educator and informs how I identify and move through the world. Throughout my life I returned to my practice of martial arts as a way to ground and find balance.

There are many reasons to study a martial art. Some are interested in competing in sports, others want to learn self defense, some seek it out to enhance their profession and some are looking for a means for personal development. For me and my students this last reason is the one that resonates. The term we use for it is satori [enlightenment] and it is about self discovery and transformation. It may seem odd to talk about personal growth when learning a martial art but through developing the body, we can also develop the mind and spirit.

If you are interested in joining me on this path, I believe that along the way you will gain health benefits, get valuable skills for self defense and discover a practice that supports you in your personal growth and development. We have an effective, beautifully designed art with a sound curriculum and a group of like minded individuals who have similar goals and want the best for you in your success. As Sensei, I am interested in each person’s individual progress and gear training to meet the needs of each of my students as an individual within our dojo community. If you think it might be for you, then please reach out and contact me. I am happy to answer questions and have you observe a class. I look forward to meeting you.
